Safe Sleep, Room Temperature & SIDS Prevention
Alone, on the back, in a crib: firm mattress, fitted sheet only. Illness is not a reason to add pillows or incline the sleeper.
Parental Care Hub helps parents learn about common infant diseases, baby symptoms, newborn care, safe sleep, feeding concerns and when to contact a pediatrician.
Emergency first
A baby who is hard to wake, has blue lips, or pauses in breathing. Call emergency services.
What this means
Safe sleep is newborn care, not a disease. Overheating, extra bedding, and side or tummy sleep raise suffocation and SIDS risk. Congestion is treated with saline and suction, not propped pillows.
Baby symptoms to notice
- Room about 20–22°C
- Baby not sweaty or mottled from extra layers
- Clear, flat sleep surface
Safe home care (not a prescription)
Every sleep on the back, including naps. No bumpers, stuffed toys, or loose blankets. Supervised tummy time only when awake.
