Spreading red erythema ring, foul or pus discharge, warmth and swelling, fever or lethargy. Emergency care for suspected omphalitis.
What this means
Cord care is core newborn care. Oils, powders, and immersion baths are inappropriate while the stump is attached. A moist pink lump after separation may be a granuloma — a clinic issue, not a home acid.
Baby symptoms to notice
- Normal dry darkening stump
- Light discharge without odor can occur
- Redness that stays at the base needs watching

Fold the diaper below the stump. Air dry. Do not apply household oils.
